Emily Brydon heads to Europe for first alpine world cup after the Olympics - 2010/03/27 18:12 Emily Brydon heads to Europe for first alpine world cup after the Olympics

Days after her final Olympic race, Emily Brydon was already preparing for the next world cup ski race in Europe this weekend.

Emily skis in Crans Montana, Switzerland in the Downhill race on Saturday and Super G on Sunday.

The final world cup of her career will follow one week later in Germany.

Speaking to The Free Press from Vancouver last week, Emily Brydon said her fall in the Olympic Super G had left her with bruising and “minor first degree tearing” that had required some physiotherapy and medical attention, although she was otherwise uninjured.

She added: “I haven't pulled on my ski boots or anything so I don't full know if it will hurt me, but once you start racing the adrenalin kicks in and it doesn't matter anyway.”

Of her third and final Olympics, where she placed 14th in Super Combined and 16th in Downhill, she said: “It definitely wasn't what I dreamed for and what I envisioned.

“It's an experience I will never forget, I have never been such so proud to be Canadian, just skiing into the finish was really powerful.

“The hardest thing for me was just I wasn't able to realize my dreams and I felt that I was letting people down – it's something that takes a little while to digest.”

Asked if she has any regrets in continuing her ski racing career until 2010 after so seriously considering leaving in 2006, Brydon is emphatic in her answer.

“No. I'm 100 per cent sure – no regrets. I have enjoyed every bit of the way although some of it is difficult at times I wouldn't change it ever.

“It has been an amazing journey there is no better place to have the apex of your career, and I would still consider it as the apex even without the results.”

I tell Emily how I watched her first Olympic race with Fernie Secondary School students who had watched her in every Olympics since they were in elementary school, and how inspiring they said that was.

She responded: “The whole town of Fernie came together and supported me. That's the power of sport. In my dream Olympics I would have won a gold medal and that is such a wonderful accomplishment but hearing things like that reaffirms for me the power of the Olympics and of sport.”
